Placed for bidding last week at the starting price of $4999,99 a rare 1990 Nintendo World Championship cartridge was sold for a whooping $99,902.00. The cartage may not be in ‘mint’ condition, but collectors want to get their hands on it as it is one of only 116 copies in existence.
The game managed to pass the world record for most expensive video game. The previous record was held by a rare Legend of Zelda cartridge, that was sold for $55,000 back in 2012.
Nintendo World Championship was given as a prize of a popular Nintendo 30-city gaming tournament back in 1990. Wanting to prove that they are ‘the best player in the world,’ players had to get the best score in the demo versions of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and Tetris within a six-minute time limit.
At the end of each tournament, the winners of each of three age groups were given a gray copy of the World Championship Cartridge, meaning that there are only 90 cartridges in existence. An even more rare gold version of the game was given out to those who won a promotional contest found in the pages of Nintendo Power Magazine. Nintendo produced only 26 copies of the gold edition, meaning one can only imagine the price of such cartridge.
