Love Child – a documentary about game addiction

by GH Staff

Although quite a lot of movies (including documentaries) have been released ever since World of WarCraft changed the ways we perceive gaming addictions, Love Child may yet be one of the best there is.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the Love Child documentary focuses on a story about a couple whose three month old daughter died of malnutrition because of their MMO addiction. Games are often blamed for massive massacres and a huge number of crimes that are actually caused by a mental disorder, but the major difference in this case is that the couple received a reduced sentence as their MMO addiction itself was classified as a mental problem.

The story unfolds in one of the most technology and gaming oriented countries in the world – South Korea, as filmmakers took the time to put together the opinion of the family, the police detective, the lawyer and the game developers of the MMO the couple was playing – Prius Online.

With Virtual Reality becoming the next step in evolution of gaming the movie Love Child makes us think about how we let technology destroy us. As developers are trying to overcome the VR gaming sickness that occurs, because your brain cannot perceive what is real and what is not and as next-gen games are looking more photo-realistic than ever, a question that arises is – could we actually let ourselves be absorbed into the virtual world as much as to not be able to tell the difference between a game and reality?
