PlayStation 4.5 May Support 4K Graphics

Upgraded PlayStation might be in the works.

According to a report made by Kotaku, Sony is currently developing the next upgraded version of the PS4, the PlayStation 4.5 if you will. Alongside many other enhancements, the report suggests that this new PS4 will support 4K resolutions.

Unfortunately the developer sources who provided this information to Kotaku didn’t say whether current PS4 holders will be able to simply update their current system or if the console will be sold separately.

The developers have also stated that this “PS4.5” will include a better graphics card that can manage 4K graphics and that will also increase the processing power to enhance the visual experience with PlayStation VR games. It’s also yet unclear whether this new console will be called PS4.5 or not, though one of the developers who spoke to Kotaku did – though in a jokingly way – call it PS4K.

I think this is a bad idea. It will unnecessarily segregate the playerbase and will damage the potential sales of PSVR, if launched near it.

    • Agreed. I think Sony should just start developing the next Playstation and leave the PS4 as is.

Not really. People weren’t confused over the shift from PS3 to PS4. Making it clear that it’s a different system is not hard.

A different system this early in the PS4’s lifecycle will hurt sales of the original and erode Sony’s reputation.

        • MrPsygo

Not according to a reasonable timeframe. About 2 1/2 years is when the work on a new system starts. Now is the time for the PS. It would not at all be out of place to see something in 2017-18.

          • Mr0303

We’re not talking about a PS5. Just a PS4 with extra features like the New 3DS. It will damge Sony’s reputation if they announce the new model this E3, since the console’s lifecycle is usually 5-6 years.

  • Lets face it, Sony would not do this as it would segregate gamers on PlayStation 4. Why would they decide to be just like Nintendo and do exactly what they have failed to do.
