Sony States the Climate is “Not Healthy” for a new Handheld

During the developer session at EGX 2015, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, implied that there wouldn’t be a successor to the PlayStation Vita anytime soon.

When asked about the prospects of a successor to their current handheld, Yoshida stated that “his team had enjoyed working on Vita,” however smartphone gaming has overtaken that segment of the market in such a way that the climate for a successor is unhealthy.

“That’s a tough question,” he replied when asked about a PlayStation Vita 2. “People have mobile phones and it’s so easy to play games on smartphones,” Yoshida said. “And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.

    It’s looking likelier that the next portable, will actually be a tablet :(

    It would be a real shame, but I think Vita will be the last handheld by Sony. None of the games it had were system sellers and even Uncharted Golden Abyss barely cracked a million.

    Still I am having much fun with it and it is the perfect device for niche Japanese titles.
