Amiibo Cards Region Free For Current NA Games

Heard about the amiibo card shortage in Japan? Thinking about buying some Japanese amiibo cards to avoid the problem when it hits your region? Well, I may have some good news for you would be importers. I opened my heart (and wallet) to purchase some key characters from the first series of Animal Crossing amiibo cards to test their functionality with various games other than Happy Home Designer (which I have been loving). The results weren’t all that surprising.

The most important characters I tested were KK Slider, Mr. Resetti, Kapp’n, and Sable Able, among others (such as Joan and lesser characters like Bob the cat). Kapp’n (or “KapnCrunch” as I named it) worked perfectly fine with Amiibo Tap: Nintendo’s Greatest Bits, as you can see from the header image. Everyone worked fine with Captain ToadHyrule Warriors, and Mario Party 10. No, I didn’t uncover any secret goodies from Smash Bros for Wii U or 3DS, nor from Mario Kart 8

While this may not be surprising, it does mean that, as many of us guessed, the cards seem to be using the same tech as the figures, so they’re region free. If you’re worried about not getting an Isabelle figure, you can probably just import her card now. I know some people may still worry that Nintendo is hiding something, so I have reached out for a comment and will update this post should I hear anything from them.

  • Are the games themselves region free?

The games are all part of amiibo tap so, um, yeah.
