Petition For Satoru Iwata Amiibo Figure Appears Online

The gaming industry was shook recently with the sudden passing of Satoru Iwata, former CEO and President of Nintendo. There are plenty of ways fans around the globe have celebrated Iwata’s legacy, however – something that stands out is the change.org petition that’s recently surpassed 14,000 supporters. The petition is to create an amiibo figure of Iwata – something many believe he would certainly approve of, myself included.¬†

Seen on the page are a few short paragraphs describing the importance of Iwata and how an amiibo figure would be a fitting tribute to the gaming icon, as follows:

Satoru Iwata’s importance to modern gamers is more than words could ever describe. After helping to create some of Nintendo’s biggest fanchises such as Pokemon, Earthbound and Super Smash Bros., Mr. Iwata’s legacy influences and inspires anyone who has ever picked up a Wiimote or 3DS stylus.

These are just a few reasons why we should honor Satoru Iwata with his very own amiibo. Even if the amiibo itself lacks in-game functionality, it serves as a small reminder of Iwata’s legacy and accomplishments.

As of writing this, just 702 more signatures¬†are needed to reach an impressive 15,000 supporters. After scrolling through the comments attached to each vote, it’s humbling to know how loved Iwata is. Now go sign!

I feel a better thing to petition for would be to have him immortalized by asking madame tussauds to create a wax statue of him.

I find it rather distasteful so soon after the man’s death. Perhaps an initial tribute in the Miiverse is a bit more on point.

I don’t think it would be a good move for Nintendo as well. They would be seen as profiteering off of a man’s death. Perhaps down the line it would be more acceptable, but right now this seems more like the demand of a crazed collector.
