New Characters Revealed in Mortal Kombat X’s Story Trailer

Developer NetherRealm Studios has released the first story trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X creative director Ed Boon tweeted earlier today that five new characters would be revealed, with the story trailer introducing both returning and brand-new fighters.

Cassie Cage, who has confronted an unmasked Sub-Zero in the trailer, is leading the newest set of Mortal Kombat X recruits, including Jacqueline Briggs (Jax’s daughter), Takashi Takeda (Kenshi’s son) and Kung Jin (a descendant of Kung Lao).

With Mortal Kombat X’s narrative taking place 25 years after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat, Outworld is going through an ongoing power struggle between Aztec-inspired warrior Kotal Kahn and Mileena, the daughter of former Emperor Shao Kahn.

The trailer, however, features some brief cameos from new and old characters in the franchise, including Rain, Shinnok, Baraka, Erron Black and Sindel.

Earlier this month, NetherRealm’s developers revealed in a behind-the-scenes video some new details on two features—Faction Wars and Living Towers—integrated in Mortal Kombat X.

Meanwhile, during the fourth Mortal Kombat X Kombat Kast stream on Twitch yesterday, the development team confirmed that Brutalities, an alternative finisher to Fatalities, would be returning in the title.

In addition to the feature’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat X—originally cut from Mortal Kombat 9 due to time constraint—the developers explained that more than 100 unique Brutalities have been designed, which can only be performed by matching certain requirements in a match.

Mortal Kombat X will launch on April 14th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

I’m really curious to see where the story goes in this one. It kind of looks like Raiden trapped Shinnok in the Kamidogu. The new characters (the kids club it seems) look a bit bland. I wonder how many of the characters we’ve seen will be playable. Milena is a given since she’s at the centre of the conflict.

I’m really hoping for another great story too. MK 2011 was just a brilliant way to re-invigerate the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole, and that stinger at the end of the game was a perfect set up to a follow-up title.

Fingers crossed this April brings the goods!
