Just yesterday, a new character known as “Lucky Chloe,” was revealed to be in the upcoming fighting game, Tekken 7.
A number of members on the popular gaming forum site, NeoGAF, did not take too kindly to the new Tekken 7 character, accusing the game of stereotyping and over-sexualizing Japanese women.
In response to the criticism, the director of Tekken 7, Katsuhiro Harada, stated the the new character will be not be released in the United States.
Furthermore, Harada resorted to both sarcasm and mockery in his tweets following the situation, joking that he would release a different, new character for the US – albeit one that is a generic, macho, “muscular,” “skinhead” male:
“Example: Looks well-muscled, Skin-head, Very powerful attack (I don’t like this idea but if you need).”

In Harada’s last 2 tweet, he states that Lucky Chloe will not be the only new character for Tekken 7 in the US, telling fans of the franchise that other new characters will indeed be coming to Western territories.
“Calm down and don’t worry. That character is East Asia and Europe “exclusive”. I’ll say again. We’ve got more new characters for Tekken 7. She is JUST one of them. She will be a country-exclusive (or region exclusive) character. We won’t include her for your region. That’s why I said calm down and don’t worry. I’ll release another character for you guys. I said we’ve got more new characters.”
What are your thoughts on Harada’s reaction to fan criticism? Also, what do you think of the criticism directed towards Lucky Chloe? Is it justified or does it have more to do with the innate differences between Western and Japanese culture?
