PlayStation Turns 20

by GH Staff

It may be December 2nd in the west, but in Japan it is December 3rd and this is important because it marks a significant anniversary for Sony PlayStation. It was 20 years ago on December 3rd, 1994 that Sony  would launch that original PlayStation console in Japan, making some of us feel old right now. It would  take about a year for PlayStation to launch in North America,  it hit shelf’s on September 5th 1995.

The PlayStation would compete against the Super Nintendo Entertainment System early in its lifetime, while also going head-head against the under performing Sega Saturn, and the powerhouse system that was the Nintendo 64.  However, despite stiff competition, mostly from the N64,  the PlayStation, as well as its redesigned PlayStation One, would obliterate all other consoles in terms of sales. It would go on to outsell the Sega Saturn about 10-1 and the N64 about 3-1. The PlayStation would go on to be the second best home selling console of all time, falling only to the PS2.

Today the hashtag #20YearsofPlay is trending worldwide with people sharing there memories of playing the ground breaking PlayStation console.  What are your favourite PlayStation memories and games? Who remembers memory cards?  One of my favourite PlayStation games would have to be Spyro the Dragon and Syphon Filter.
