If you’re a gamer, there’s no doubt you know of Sony and Microsoft’s respective monthly subscription services – PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live. You may also be aware of the fact that both services offer free games every month for their subscribers.
But exactly how much is a subscription worth? According to research performed by fellow gaming website, PushSquare.com, quite a lot, it seems.
The site’s study focused moreso on the Sony side of things with a detailed analysis of PlayStation Plus, specifically dealing with how much the free games offered (across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita) to subscribers are worth.
In a nutshell, an annual PlayStation Plus subscription costs about $50/£40. And for the year of 2014, subscribers theoretically saved $1350/£960 ( nearly $1400/£1000) just by opting into Sony’s service.
There are, however, a few caveats – more on that after the break.
PlayStation Plus Saved Subscribers Nearly $1400 This Year
It was mentioned above that the savings subscribers received from PlayStation Plus was theoretical and had a few caveats. This is due to the fact that the free games/discounts offered to subscribers are spread across all three Sony platforms – PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. In order to take full advantage of the service’s savings, one would have to own and consistently use the aforementioned systems to reap the full benefits of PlayStation Plus.
Furthermore, once, or if, a current subscriber decides to unsubscribe, their collection of games acquired through the service are lost – unless they decide to re-subcribe to it.
Another important factor to consider, especially in regards to subscribers, is the quality of the free games. PushSquare averaged out the Metacritic scores of all games on offer through the service and arrived at a US/EU average of 79/78 respectively.
A few examples of games given away through PlayStation Plus include Tomb Raider, Don’t Starve, Puppeteer, TowerFall Ascension, Dead Space 3, Fez, Velocity 2X, Spelunky, Pix the Cat, and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
What are your thoughts on this information? If you’re a current subscriber to PS Plus, do you feel that you get your money’s worth? If you aren’t currently a subscriber to the service, will this news persuade you to do so? Why or why not?
