PlayStation Experience: Story, Characters and Gameplay Details Revealed for Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X

NetherRealm Studios’ highly anticipated Mortal Kombat X has had new details revealed at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas last weekend.

The Kombat Tether, a fan-made Mortal Kombat community page on Facebook, posted that YouTube user BruskPoetProductions had the opportunity to ask Shaun Himmerick, executive producer on Mortal Kombat X, some questions regarding characters, story and gameplay mechanics in the title.

It was already confirmed by NetherRealm Studios that Mortal Kombat X’s story spans more than 25 years following the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9, but Himmerick said that more information behind the narrative would be revealed in either January or February 2015.

Although Gamer Headlines reported earlier this year that Ed Boon, creative director on Mortal Kombat X, had confirmed that the title’s roster would feature 24 characters (12 veteran fighters and 12 new combatants), this might not be the final number for the game, as NetherRealm Studios will attempt to “jam in” more fighters if they can.

Babality, an iconic feature that allows players to turn their opponent’s character into a baby at the end of each fight, will not return in Mortal Kombat X, with Himmerick citing that it doesn’t suit the new build of the installment.

Fatalities, on the other hand, may occur in the story of the title — a first in the series, considering most characters are normally killed off in a more traditional fashion — while the sorcerer Quan Chi’s ability of resurrection means the ‘revenants’ of fighters who met their demise in MK9 will make an appearance throughout the course of the main campaign.

Earlier this year, Shaun Himmerick introduced the official character trailer for Quan Chi and during the video he confirmed that Netherrealm’s sorcerer will “play a major part in the MKX story.”

There will be no ‘day’ or ‘night’ version of stages in MKX, but some stages will feature a ‘dynamic weather system’ that will change as the match progresses.

— Every stage will have some form of environmental interaction.

— The game is to be submitted next month for the final stage of development.

— A lot of characters are ‘finished’ back at NetherRealm Studios.

— When asked about unlockable characters, Shaun stated he couldn’t answer that question.

— There will be some form of ‘King of The Hill’ in online play.

— Goro is Shaun’s favourite character in the game at this point; he will get a reveal trailer eventually.

Running at 1080p and 60fps, Mortal Kombat X will launch on April 14th, 2015 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
