Four more napalm happy, shotgun wielding and power armour abusing hunters have been unveiled for Evolve

Turtle Rock Studios has unveiled four new hunters and three new modes for their upcoming monster slashing shooter Evolve. The four new hunters called Abe, Caira, Parnell and Cabot and each of them fit into the games trapper, medic, assault and support class. Meanwhile the three new modes are called Rescue, Nest and Defend and add a nice change of pace to the game.

Starting with the new characters, Abe is the groups trapper and along with being the resident smartass is armed with a unique combat shotgun that changes how it fires depending on how hard you pull the trigger. If you pull it fast then it will fire a wide-spread shot, which is useful both for short-range combat and also if you get caught unaware and start mashing the trigger. Shoot more slowly however and you’ll fire a tighter shot that’s useful for ranged shots.

Abe also comes with static grenades which can stick to their targets and slow them down which is useful for chasing injured monsters as well as a tracking dart pistol. By shooting the monster with it the group will be able to locate the monster easier, however Abe can also shoot it at the prey animals which if the monster eats will tag the tag the monster. Abe also comes with the standard “mobile arena” to trap the monster in an unbreakable force field.

Moving onto the group medic Caira, she comes armed with a grenade launcher which comes with both napalm and healing grenades. Healing grenades like you would expect can heal everyone in your party expect for the monster and they can also effect the local wildlife which could be useful for preventing the monster from evolving. Her napalm grenades meanwhile deal damage over time to whatever you hit and makes the target take more damage from the other hunters during its effect. Finally her special ability activates an acceleration field which increases the speed of everybody caught in it.

Stop firing rockets at the monster on the generator we’re trying to protect. Us a rail-gun instead.

Next up we have the assault of the group and soon to be a medics best friend, Parnell. Parnell is armed with an automatic shotgun for short-range combat and an automatic rocket launcher for distance but what makes him stand out is his power armour. According to Turtle Rocks co-founder Chris Ashton “When he activates his super-soldier ability, it basically makes him inhuman. He can run faster, he can jump higher, he can shoot weapons insanely fast, and reload insanely fast. The price, though, is that it damages his body. We wanted him to be as good as the other assaults in non-super-soldier mode, but super-soldier mode is like Assault Plus. It’s better. But we had to have a price for that somewhere.” With the proper support Parnells super-soldier ability will be great for rushing down weaken monsters but it will also make him the prefect target for the monster to target first.

Finally the group is rounded out by its support unit and leader Cabot. His armed with a rail gun which is great for long-range combat and bursts into shrapnel when it strikes hard targets. This makes him great for dealing long-range combat against monsters with tough hides but his also has a damage amplifying beams which does exactly what you think. His finally ability allows him to call in a radioactive cloud which will coat everything it touches allowing you to track the monster over greater distances.

Evolve

So hows really the monster when the hunters are destroying eggs.

On top of the four new characters, Turtle Rock Studios revealed three new modes called Rescue, Nest and Defend which according to Ashton “We made these modes years and years ago,” said Ashton, “but we didn’t want to overwhelm with a bunch of different modes at first.” Starting with Rescue the hunters have to locate and rescue lost colonists who will be slowing revealed in groups of two, three and fives while the monster has to find and eat them. The first side to eat or rescue five colonists win.

Nest meanwhile has the hunters trying to destroy six monster eggs that are randomly placed around the map while the monster tries to protect them. The monster can also hatch the eggs to summon AI mini-monsters to help even the odds but that’s risky because if the monster dies that counts as a destroyed egg. The final mode is called Defend and it sees the hunters and a couple of gun turrets defending a series of generators from the monster and its AI allies. In this mode the hunters will respawn after 30 seconds when they die compared to the usual 2 minutes but this is balanced out by having the monster maxed out straight away in term of strength. According Ashton “It’s supposed to feel like one of those ‘it all comes down to this’ things.

Turtle Rock Studios has unveiled four new hunters that the players can play as, as well as three new game modes called Rescue, Nest and Defend.
