Developer Eidos-Montréal has unveiled the brand-new current-generation engine the studio’s been working on, with it acting as the “cornerstone to the development of the Deus Ex Universe projects at the studio.”

“Dawn Engine,” as Eidos-Montréal has dubbed it, has been developed to boast “real-time physics and advanced artificial intelligence programming,” while the developers have said they used the “IO Interactive’s Glacier 2 engine” as a template to build this new engine on.

“The technology behind any game is a key component in ensuring that gamers are able to develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,” says David Anfossi, studio head at Eidos-Montréal.

“We’ve worked tirelessly over the last few years developing this engine, building upon and improving both the visual and immersive artistry in our games. We truly believe that our engine will help us to strengthen both the gameplay and storytelling experiences we strive to create.”

Studio head David Anfossi announced last year in a blog post the creation of Deus Ex: Universe, a way for the developers to link the universe through the use of tablets, smartphones, books and video games. Additionally, Anfossi confirmed Montréal are currently developing the next title in the series for current-generation consoles — Xbox One and PS4, for anyone who’s still calling them ‘next-generation’ — and PC.
