Ubisoft being pressured into making PC games run at 30fps?

Ubisoft is the new EA

Earlier this week, Ubisoft reportedly commissioned a handful of its staff to visit a school in France – Grenoble INP Ensimag, a prominent applied maths and computer science institution – to explain how they perform their tasks at work.

Interestingly enough, the employees’ visit revealed a startling amount of information – not surprising coming from a company of which one employee stated that the video games industry will adopt 30 frames per second as a standard in the future.

Supposedly, one of the attendees at Ubisoft’s school presentation asked the question many gamers have been asking themselves since late May.

The question: “What the hell happened with Watch Dogs?

One of Ubisoft’s online programmers responded that right before the company releases a game, they have to send a copy of the respective game to console manufacturers, i.e. Microsoft and Sony, who tells them what content can stay, and what content has to go.

Ubisoft Pressured into 30fps on PC?

Ubisoft pressured into making 30fps PC games

Ubisoft’s game architect said that while the company makes 60fps a priority, certain limitations have demanded that their latest games run at 30fps.

However, what is slightly concerning (to say the least) – especially to the PC gaming community – is that the game architect stated that console makers are “pressuring” Ubisoft into doing the very same thing on PC, implying that Microsoft is forcing them to lock the framerate at 30 FPS on PC.

Furthermore, the Ubisoft employee revealed that they reuse as much code as possible, which explains many gamers’ criticism of Ubisoft games being similar, even if they are different game series entirely.

Another person asked Ubisoft if the company was “aware of the negative responses of the recent decision to lock your games into 30fps,” and if so, what they thought about it.

In response, an employee used upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Unity, as an example and stated that Ubisoft has to choose between the fluidity/smoothness of a game and its graphical fidelity/image quality.

What are your thoughts on this news? Do you believe that Ubisoft is being pressured by console manufacters such as Microsoft or Sony into making their games run at 30fps on all platforms (including PC)? Why or why not?
