In the coming month, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 mini are believed to undergo upgrading action to the Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system.
It’s quite rare when a mini version device lives up to the standard of a larger version, although the mini version is part of the newest generation of the device. Though, in the case the comparison is quite close as the S% is going to benefit from the added features like the IP67 certification and the fingerprint scanner.
Design and Display
The first aspect to note here is that the S5 mini is a mini version in all aspects. No doubt, it looks like a younger brother of the Samsung S5. The S5 mini continues to feature all the basic characteristics such as its plastic back, faux metal band and lines in the design. We can certainly say that the mini gadget is very convenient to hold in the hand. As the 4.5 inch screen is very comfortable to use. Its dimensions design allows easy access of all options, from both right and left side. The weight of the phone at 120 grams is very light to carry. The mini version boasts a striking, colorful display with a 720 x 1280 pixels resolution and a 326ppi density. The gadgets dimensional are 131x65x9.1 respectively. The design is more curved and has more rounded edges. The feature that stands out on the S4 is its wonderful display. The S4 screen has a 5 inch screen super AMOLED display that offers1080 x1920 resolution or 441ppi density. S4 has a unique choice of black, black mist, white frost and arctic blue whereas S5 mini comes in electric blue, charcoal black, shimmery white and copper gold.
Hardware and Operating System
Samsung has its own Exynos chipset for both the S4 and S5 mini. S4 runs on Exynos 5 octa core processor chip that is actually an integration of two quad core processors. One of these quad core processor is clocked at 1.6GHz while the second quad core processor is clocked at 1.2GHz. Samsung S4 is available in various memory spaces such as 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, all of them running on 2GB RAM.
On the other hand, S5 mini runs on 1.5GB RAM and Exynos 3 quad core processor chipset and is clocked at 1.4GHz. The bad news is that the mini version is only available in one version i.e. 16GB memory space. Both gadgets are able to give support for external memory with its microSD card going high up to 64GB.
Presently, both the Samsung versions run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat with extra TouchWiz UI. As stated before, both the models will be upgraded to Android 4.4.4 KitKat in the near future.
Camera
It was the S4 among the Samsung handsets that brought forward the new features of the camera application. Some of them are the simultaneous video, dual shot, panorama, dual video call, image recording and many more. Unfourtunately these features are not available in the S5. Plus the S4 also has a better camera with a 13-MP shooter with LED flash with an autofocus at the back and a 2-MP shooter at the front. The S5 mini delivers with an 8-MP back camera with a 2.1-MP shooter on the front.
Battery
As far as the battery life is concerned, the S5 mini is not as good as S4 as it is a smaller device, thus offering lesser space. Since S4 is bigger, it provides better battery life at 2600 mAh which means that it can be used for approximately 17 hours of call-making time and 62 hours of playing songs. S5 mini’s battery life is very less at 2100 mAh which is proportional to 10 hours of call-making time and 47 hours of playing songs.
Price
Initially Samsung S4 was very costly but with the roll out of new Samsung devices the rates have dropped such, the price for the SIM free version is around $400 and the S5 mini is available at $ 540.
