Final Fantasy XIV: Building an Airship
Disclaimer: The original title “Final Fantasy XIV: Building an Airship in Patch 2.5” has changed to “Final Fantasy XIV: Building an Airship” to remove further confusion. The intentions for using Patch 2.5 within in the title is to correlate with details that Mr. Naoki Yoshida expressed in his previous interviews, regarding the airships and patch 2.5. Patch 2.5 contains features that will help setup the possibility of building airships like crafting. However, Heavensward (v3.0) will contain more features to actually create and operate these flying vessels.
During the on-going Final Fantasy Fan Festival around the world (United States, England, and Japan), Square Enix have announced and provided more details about the upcoming expansion called “Heavensward” and Patch 2.4 in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn; this growing massive multiplayer online game has included numerous add-on features in just one year and will continue to introduce new features, such as building and customizing an airship. In some recent interviews, the Lead Producer (Naoki Yoshida) delivered some interesting facts about these airships.
According to some folks, Naoki Yoshida makes several interviews within a day when he makes an appearance at an event. And honestly, he does! Fortunately, some folks do ask some interesting questions that often lead to some insightful responses. Starting with MMORPG, Chris Marlow asks: What can you tell us about airships? How will players build them and what sorts of functionality will they have?
“We’re currently planning for patch 2.5, not this next one, but the one coming after that, we’re planning to incorporate a mechanic for free company crafting. So if you have free company housing, you can set up a basement shop where you have your own crafting room for your free company where your members can do your activities in that space. So one of the first items you can make with your free company crafting is the Aetherial Wheel, it might not have been announced just yet, but that’s the first thing you’ll be able to build with the free company crafting, and so you expand on that and in the expansion one of the recipes will include having your free company build your teams airship. So once you build your free company airship you can select which players can board that and you would access certain areas that only your airship can access and go into battle and explore that area. That’s the gist of it right now.”
In an interview with Secrets of Eorzea, he expands on how players will actually need man power and time to operate an airship. He even goes far to provide a blueprint! Grover wrote these questions: How will we use airships? How will we maneuver them? Will we need several player to make full use of them?
“To build an airship, you’re going to need manpower and time. You’ll need to craft a boating, and an engine. You’ll have to combine the two. We will definitely ask for cooperation of the players. The airship will have one captain, if everyone tries to drive it, it will crash. That’s as much as I can tell you today.”
If folks were wondering if the skies are going to be crowded with massive and multiple airships all at one time, don’t fret because he insists that an adventure waits for sky explorers since flying around Eorzea would be quite boring. However, he still emphasizes that the airships is a collaborative product that cannot be solely controlled by one individual. In an interview with the Final Fantasy Network, Sharjeel Hanif asked the following inquiries: Would the airship be controlled like a flying mount where you can go through the map, or if it will work in some other way?
“What was announced yesterday, if we could set aside controlling the airship by yourself, it is more of a free company thing. You build your airship, and you go as a group, and you access areas that can only be accessed by airship. You have different content available, like different battles and certain materials that you can only gather and certain areas you can only access by the airship. So it is more that type of game content. It is not about controlling the airship by yourself.”
Essentially, the airships are meant to open up new areas, contents, and crafts. As another quick reminder, Heavensward and these sky vessels will appear sometime in spring next year. Additionally, the Dreams of Ice or update 2.4 will be released on October 28, 2014.
