Far Cry 4 dev thinks linear story games will suffer in today's market

Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world, first-person shooter adventure, Far Cry 4, is set to release soon after another Ubisoft-published/developed, presumably epic, open-world title – Assassin’s Creed Unity – arrives on current-generation consoles and PC this November.

It seems as though Ubisoft is putting a significant portion of their resources towards developing open-world video games, as evidenced by the company’s aforementioned Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Unity (and Rogue), and this summer’s Watch Dogs.

A question a handful of gamers may be asking themselves is:

“Ubisoft, what’s up with all the open-world games?”

Fortunately, Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson has shed some light on Ubisoft’s move towards open-world titles and, arguably more importantly, his thoughts on linear story games.

Read more details after the break.

Far Cry 4 dev on plight of linear story games

In an interview with TotalXbox.com, Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson said the following in regards to the potential plight of linear story games in the modern video games market:

“I’m really interested in emergent games and where that’s going with video sharing and Twitch. I think linear story games are really going to suffer in the modern marketplace.”

“They’re already super high-quality, and we’re already seeing their audiences migrate to the big open world games. If I open my friends list and see everybody on the same mission, doing the same thing…I think that’s nowhere near as strong a sales pitch as opening your friends list and seeing 40 people doing completely different things.”

What are your thoughts on what Alex Hutchinson had to say about linear story games?

With the immense success of linear, narrative-focused video games such as Bioshock Infinite, the Uncharted franchise, Halo, or the recent The Last of Us, do you feel that his prediction is accurate?

With that in mind, will gamers begin to shift from the previously mentioned games to more open-world, social/online-centric video games, such as Far Cry 4, Destiny, et cetera?
