Destiny: Bungie left future DLC on-disc due to people’s bad internet

by GH Staff
Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, top this year's list of best-selling games Activision says

Harold Ryan, the president of Destiny developer, Bungie, is apparently well aware of many of the criticisms thrown at Destiny since its release in September.

Much of the game’s criticism came from its story, or lack thereof.

Furthermore, a number of players discovered that they could glitch into various areas presumably reserved for future DLC, which sparked a relatively large backlash against Destiny, possibly more so than the aforementioned critique of its narrative structure.

Interestingly, in a recent interview, Harold Ryan provided Bungie’s logic behind shipping Destiny with planned, future DLC content already on the game’s disc – the reasoning may surprise you:

Read more details on what Ryan had to say in regards to Destiny‘s on-disc DLC after the break.

Reasons for Having Future Destiny DLC On-disc

Destiny DLC content on-disc because people have bad internet 2

The following snippet comes from Eurogamer’s phone interview with Harold Ryan:

Eurogamer: I’m sure you know about the recent leaks with players able to see a lot of this planned content already in the game. Based on what you’ve told me, a lot of that doesn’t seem to be in The Dark Below.

Harold Ryan: There’s a bunch of shared-world content we’ve shipped on the disc specifically to limit download sizes for people. Both inside the US and all over the world, how much you download on your local home internet connection can be a problem, and even how much storage space it takes up on your console.

So we share a lot of assets across all the activities in the game. When people get into areas that aren’t unlocked right now, they’re seeing pieces we built and shipped ahead of time, but they’re by no means the finished experiences or even the finished content.

But when we can get into these areas already and see this content, there’s a feeling at the content is finished, cut and saved for DLC.

In related news, the release date for Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below, has finally been revealed. It will launch on Tuesday, December 9th, according to both Activision and Bungie.

Destiny - The Dark Below

The Dark Below is first of two expansions planned for Destiny, the second one being House of WolvesThe Dark Below will deal with the Hive, whilst the second expansion will deal with the Fallen. The Dark Below is touted to introduce all-new weapons and gear to earn throughout a new story, as well as new co-operative and multiplayer activities.

What are your thoughts on Bungie’s reasoning for shipping Destiny with future DLC already on-disc? Is it really to limit download sizes for people who have less-than-stellar internet connections, or is it an altruistic spin on damage control?
