According to a post on Reddit’s Civilization subreddit, by r/Civ user MetaGamingAtLast, it appears that if players decide to peruse the newly released Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s game folder, in particular, the “assets\Gameplay\XML\” one, there exists a “Religions” folder, alongside a file named “GlobalDefines.xml.”
In Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s aforementioned “Religions” folder, there is a list of various beliefs and their associated in-game effects. Furthermore, in the “GlobalDefines.xml” file, there are a host of different values that relate to religion.
You can view MetaGamingAtLast’s Civilization: Beyond Earth religion findings after the break.

The files and assets found within Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s game folders are most likely linked to features that had to be cancelled due to time constraints. However, it may also be due to Civilization: Beyond Earth running on Civilization V’s game engine.
Another reason may be due to the possibility that religions or similar gameplay mechanics may be added in upcoming expansions to Civilization: Beyond Earth. Regardless, despite the feature’s presumed canning, it will be interesting to see if, when, or how it is implemented in Civilization: Beyond Earth in the future.
Keep in mind, that this information is not in any form or fashion confirmed by Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s developer, Firaxis. This article will be updated accordingly if, or when, relevant information surfaces.
What are your thoughts on the discovery of religion files in Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s game folders? Do you feel that religions or a similar gameplay feature will be added to the game at a later date? Why or why not?
