Civilization: Beyond Earth – Check out BE’s shameless plug in Civ 5

Civilization: Beyond Earth's clever, shameless plug in Civ 5

Sid Meier’s Civilization V, the popular, generally well-received, and expansion pack-laden older brother of the recently released PC game, Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth, received a patch/update via Steam yesterday.

Naturally, gamers not privy to checking patch notes and the like probably assumed it was in response to bugs or routine maintenance (and they would be correct in some regards). However, it seems that the developers at Firaxis had a much more clever, albeit shameless motive for updating Civilization V.

Check out what appears on-screen after a science victory in Civilization V after the break.

As clearly seen in the image above, upon claiming victory through science mastery, Civ 5 players can either exit to the main menu, play another turn, or…go beyond earth – Civilization: Beyond Earth, that is.

If the player decides to “Go Beyond Earth,” it merely leads them to Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s store page on Steam. Clever, Firaxis, clever.

While this may not be the first time this sort of cross-promotion ilk has occurred, it is a fairly amusing way to do it.

If you’re interested in seeing Civilization V‘s full patch notes for the recent update, you can click here (interestingly enough, it doesn’t anything related to what was reported above).

Also, for those unfamiliar with Civilization: Beyond Earth, it is a turn-based, 4X video game developed by Firaxis Games, and released on Microsoft Windows on last week, October 24, 2014. The game will also be released later on for OS X and Linux.

Civilization: Beyond Earth cross-promotion

Civilization: Beyond Earth is considered to be a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri, as the game shares much of its development team, alongside a large amount of concepts which were introduced in the game. The game’s setting is particularly notable as it takes place in the future, with mankind traveling through space and founding colonies on extraterrestrial planets after recovering from a  catastrophic event known only as “The Great Mistake.”

What are your thoughts on Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s clever cross-promotion plug in Civ 5? Is it shameless, intelligent, or both?
