Robert Downey Jr. as da Vinci in Assassin’s Creed movie?

Robert Downey Jr. has been rumoured to have signed on to join the Assassin’s Creed movie as the role of Leonardo da Vinci.

The rumour was originally reported by Moviepilot, but if you check the page, the rumour has been removed. There’s not much that we know about the Assassin’s Creed movie, but seeing this rumour seems to suggest that it’s based around the events of Assassin’s Creed 2, following the story of beloved assassin Ezio.

Seeing as the story has been taken down, we have no idea whether the rumour was true or not. Although Downey is a fantastic and hilarious actor, I’m not sure he would fit da Vinci’s role very  well. He can portray intellect very well (as seen in Sherlock Holmes), he can capture da Vinci’s charm due to his unique humour, but da Vinci in the games isn’t loudly outspoken or obvious with his humour.

Can Downey live up to our beloved da Vinci?

Michael Fassbender is still attached to the role of the leading character. He’s stated that although the games themselves were a lot of inspiration, they’re eager to mix the film up a bit. Maybe Downey’s role as da Vinci could be one of the things they want to mix up, changing his personality and portrayal in the films. Fassbender has also worked with Justin Kurzel, the director of the upcoming film. Fassbender tells us that “Justin should be doing one thing, and that’s directing… He’s just fantastic in terms of his vision.”

The film is set to be released May 22nd 2015.

What do you guys think of this? Da Vinci is a humble character in the games, and while having some subtle humour in his lines, he wasn’t overtly hilarious. This concerns me regarding Downey’s potential portrayal of him. Downey isn’t exactly renown for his humbleness or subtlety. While I think he will bring da Vinci’s role to life in a unique and hilarious way, I can’t help but think better castings for the role were available. Saying this, if they decide to change how da Vinci is portrayed, Downey could give him a refreshingly different personality than what we’ve already seen. I’d love to hear your opinions on this.
