PSP to lose PSN support

Sony has made the announcement that the PSP will be losing PlayStation Network support very soon.

According to PSU, Sony has sent out notifications that the PlayStation Portable will be losing PlayStation Network support on September 15th. Without PSN support the PSP would no longer be able to support online multiplayer for many of its titles and would also lose the ability to connect to the PlayStation Store.

While this news affects all PSP owners, PSP Go owners would need to back up all of their digital purchases in order to have access to any of the titles available on the UMD-less system.

PSU does make a note that PSP owners can re-download and transfer their digital titles to their portable systems by connecting their PSP to a computer and accessing the web browser version of the PlayStation Store. Alternatively, the PlayStation 3 can be used as a means of re-downloading digital PSP titles and transferring them to the portable device.

Released in North America back in 2005, the PSP was Sony’s first major attempt in the handheld portable gaming market. The system’s successor, the PlayStation Vita, was released in 2012 and will not be affected by the PSP’s loss of PlayStation Network support.
