Microsoft want to stream Xbox games through your browser

Don Mattrick Xbox One reveal

First it was the Wii U that let you stream games to your controller, and then Sony letting you stream games to your PS Vita and now certain Xperia phones and tablets. Nvidia even have Shield, if you’re part of the PC crowd. Microsoft now looks to be the last to the party, but not without an impressive alternative solution. Instead of specialist devices, the big M hopes to stream Xbox 360 and Xbox One games to any device that runs either their own Internet Explorer or Google’s Chrome. Support for smartphones and tablets have also been hinted at.

Inside play testers who spilled their beans to Neowin say that the Azure powered service will be able to stream games all the way up to 60fps where possible, which while rare on consoles is usually considered standard practice when playing from your computer. It will also come with full support for interacting with the Xbox dashboard, letting you access other popular media features on your console like Xbox TV. Full access to your TV’s cable/satellite box while on the go? Say it aint so.

This news comes exactly one year after Microsoft showed off a tech demo of Halo 4 running from a cloud server, then known as ‘Project Outtatime’. Though Microsoft isn’t the first to offer cloud streaming games, Onlive beat them to the punch by a few years, this project seems to have plenty more potential than the struggling service. More on this potentially exciting stuff when it develops.
