According to Frank Gibeau, an EA executive within the company’s mobile division, has stated that the upcoming Apple iPhone 6 will be “on par with next-generation consoles.”

More details after the break:

iPhone 6 Performance Comparable to PS4/Xbox One

Gibeau told Gamesindustry.biz that the iPhone 6 demonstrates the diminishing gap (in terms of performance) between current-generation gaming consoles and mobile devices.

He also stated the following in regards to the iPhone 6’s technical specifications:

“With the retina display and the improved processor, combined with the Metal [graphics] capabilities and 128 GB of memory, that gets you to a device that’s on part [sic] with next-generation consoles. That’s moving perfectly into our strike zone”

Mr. Gibeau even went so far as to state that “mobile [gaming] is, in many ways, the future of EA.”

Apple debuted the two versions of the iPhone 6 (standard and a larger Plus variant) this past Tuesday, The standard version of the iPhone 6 will have a 4.7-inch screen at 1334 x 750 resolution, and the larger 6 Plus version will have a 5.5 inch screen at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

While the iPhone 6’s full specification list has not been released, public speculation and rumors say that the upcoming device will have a 1.4 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM.

Obviously, based on these specs alone (even if they were doubled), Apple’s new iPhone 6/6 Plus will not be anywhere near the performance of the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. In regards to memory, the current-generation of consoles are packing 8 GBs of RAM, as opposed to the new iPhone’s paltry 1 GB.

The iPhone 6 will run on Apple’s iOS8 firmware, which is touted to reduce the demand of the device’s background processes by a considerable amount, which means that applications and, in this case, mobile games will be able to draw more memory.

What are  your thoughts on Gibeau’s claims? Do you think you’ll be playing AAA-level games on the iPhone 6 when it releases, or will you stick to sitting on the courch, PS4/XBO controller in hand, in front of your big-screen television? Is mobile gaming becoming a competent substitute for console gaming?
