Destiny: Centipede Error Fix scheduled Update 3.1

by GH Staff

In a previous article, Bungie has confirmed reports on twitter about an on-going online technicality with the Destiny servers and some universities’ networks. Since the release on September 9 in North America, these academic students couldn’t access Destiny’s online contents. While facing this complication, Bungie’s latest massive multiplayer online project has received low ratings in reviews from popular websites. Besides these two issues, the company has been facing the growing emergence of cheaters and  hackers. After hearing these chain of terrible news, the developer has been working on solving these on-going complications.

On September 9, the error was reported by Bungie’s community manager named David “DeeJ” Dague who gave forum members the first update on the issue. Here’s the original message:

“A potential cause are security devices that don’t recognize Destiny network traffic. We’re in touch with the manufacturers of these devices to create an update that we hope will enable you to play.”

On September 12, David also provided some more information as a second update on this on-going issue. David stated this positive news to the forum community:

“We have isolated the issue and are working with security device manufacturers to release a fix this coming Monday, September 15th. Affected universities will need to apply the patch from the security device vendor to fix the problem.”

Unfortunately, there’s not a specified time, but they’ll be working with these scholarly places.

On September 15, GameInformer Mike Futter spoke with Bungie President, Harold Ryan, and the team about the centipede issue impacting universities and colleges. In the article, they emphasis that these academic places must apply the update that is scheduled for today.

The update will need to be applied at the Universities to enable students to access the game.”

Though the article confirmed the expected update to be released, most players who were expecting a quick fix were frustrated by the lack of communication and customer service. For agonizing hours, students have been waiting to receive a report from IT or Bungie to mention when they have official released the patch as they cannot configure the network. On the other hand, game owners who actually have access to their home network and are suffering from this error has also been waiting.

While home network owners from around the world (Belgium, China, etc.) have reported in downloading the latest patch, they have consistently mentioned the “same thing” that they still get booted out from the centipede error.  In the midst of the terrible and frustrating silence, Bungie has announced an upcoming event with little to no word on the centipede issue.

During these hours, the image from the photo below came from this source. It was the list of instructions that Bungie provided.

While the above message has finally disappeared, David made another announcement. However, his message arrived around 11: 20 PM EST.  Meaning, the team practically relieved some stressful folks, but it means the developer has missed their deadline for many hopeful individuals who live across the globe. In the forum, they provided this message:

“We have determined the cause at the root of most of the issues being encountered on university campuses. We have been in touch with network admins at most of the universities listed on this forum (thanks again for helping us help you). In summary, there are network security devices that have been incorrectly identifying Destiny traffic as a bit-torrent. We have also reached out the manufacturers of the security devices in question. They’ve been awesome, and have released an update that will allow you to play on a network protected by their hardware. That update will need to be applied by your local network administrators, assuming they have not done this already.

If you would like to put us in touch with the people in charge of your network, tell them to email us at universitynetworks@bungie.com, or provide us with their contact information. Do not post it here!

We’ll be working to solve every issue that blocks a Guardian from the Tower. Keep posting on this forum.”

[Update 3.1] On September 16, Bungie has started the Vault of Glass at their schedule time, but no concrete reports have surfaced from the team about how many cases (involving the university or the home networks) have been solved. Yet, they like to inflame audiences with these twitter messages:
