Official game sales figures have revealed that Destiny’s launch is the biggest for a new video game IP in the U.K.’s history. That accolade was only recently claimed by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, having been held since 2011 by previous incumbent L.A. Noire. As well as being top of the list of launch week sales for a new IP, Destiny also features high up the rankings of all video game launches in the U.K.. Indeed, Destiny’s launch is the 17th biggest in the U.K.’s history, with only games from the Grand Theft Auto, Call Of Duty, FIFA, and Battlefield franchises selling more in their respective launch weeks. One imporant factor to remember, however, is that this measure does not take digital sales into account.
In addition, Destiny is the U.K.’s biggest video game launch of 2014 thus far. The sci-fi online shooter outsold Watch Dogs, Titanfall, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and Infamous: Second Son which make up the rest of the top five.
The official figures also confirmed the sales split between the different consoles on which Destiny was released. The PlayStation 4 version perhaps unsurprisingly performed best sales wise, with a 46% share of Destiny sales. Xbox One took the next biggest chunk with 36% of Destiny copies sold on that console. Finally, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions made up 14% and 4% of sales respectively. This means that there was a 50/50 sales split between Microsoft and Sony consoles.
