Super Mario Spikers Was To Be A Volleyball/Wrestling Crossover
Had Super Mario Spikers not been cancelled, it would have seen the cast of the Mario franchise perform in a volleyball/wrestling crossover.
As reported on Unseen64, Super Mario Spikers was in development by Next Level Games, the team that brought us Super Mario Strikers and its successor Super Mario Strikers: Charged for the Gamecube. Spikers was intended to be released on the Wii but never really made it past its initial phase of conceptualization.
After Super Mario Strikers was well received and eventually a huge hit, Nintendo allowed Next Level Games a larger budget to continue with the Mario and sport crossover.
As reported on Unseen64, a former artist of Next Level Games said;
It was a wrestling/volleyball hybrid with a game show slant. It was never released and was financed as more of a reward to Next Level for doing such a great job on MSC
Regrettably, Super Mario Spikers was turned down when pitched to Nintendo due to the fact that the game clashed with their code of honor.
Having been a huge fan of Super Mario Strikers and Super Mario Strikers: Charged, this volleyball/wrestling crossover would have been an awesome game to have played. But, who knows, maybe someday this idea will be picked up again.
What do you think about Super Mario Spikers? Do you think it would have turned out to be as big of a success as Strikers? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section below.
