Today marks the day that DICE starts revealing the upcoming Final Stand DLC for Battlefield 4. An update post was published on the DICE blog for Battlefield 4 and various high profile youtube gamers are beginning to post beta gameplay. So far Final Stand looks astonishingly different from the rest of the Battlefield 4 content released thus far.
The hook for Battlefield 4 Final Stand is future technology and advanced warfare (whoops). It’s no accident that the Final Stand DLC is set in tundra wastelands with futuristic weapons, vehicles, and gadgets. DICE is going for a throwback to the 2006 DICE game Battlefield 2142. Battlefield 2142, if you aren’t familiar, was released after Battlefield 2 and featured futuristic warfare in the year 2142. Mechs and hover tanks and lasers were the name of the game in 2142 as it will also be in Final Stand.
Players can now drive around in hover tanks, snowmobiles, and flying death drones. Gameplay so far has featured a snowy Russian terrain based around a research facility and munitions factory experimenting with the tools of destruction that will one day be present in the Battlefield 2142 timeline. The regular scout helicopters and transport heli’s and LAVs will still be in the game. However, tanks will no longer run on wheels but jet propulsion. ATV’s and dirt bikes are replaced with the snowmobiles. A new addition to the SUAV and CUAV family comes with a Battlefield pickup drone with mini gun attached. A rail gun with 8 shots and almost zero bullet drop and lead time can also be picked up on the battlefield.
Apparently, Bf4 developers have planned for a long time for the Final Stand DLC to feature future tech that stands far apart from anything else in the series so far. Perhaps this is a tease of an upcoming Battlefield release? It’s very likely. With a slew of several games with their own iterations of future tech and warfare coming out, DICE and EA may have decided to jump into the fray. Games like Titanfall, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, and Destiny are introducing a popular wave into the future. It’s likely that this will be a trend in the upcoming years of Next-Gen gaming.
Perhaps, the most exciting part about the Final Stand DLC is that you can start playing it today. Premium members can access the Final Stand weapons, gadgets, vehicles, and even maps starting today on the CTE servers. If you are a premium member and haven’t signed up for the Community Test Servers now might be a good time to do so. For the next 4 days, each of the new maps will be playable for one day on CTE. With limited spaces on the servers that means not everyone will get to play each map. So the rush is on to get your spot.
What do you think about this rush into the future for so many games? Do you want Battlefield to follow or do you still want the faux realistic military experience the series has to offer? Let me know down in the comments below!
