While console hacking news doesn’t make an appearance too often at Gamer Headlines, this story seems important enough to post. According to a fresh mention on the OpenModding forums, it appears that an infamous Sony scene member called Hishamage may have cracked the code of Sony’s PS4 to create a functional PS4 jailbreak. The image above shows the system’s debug settings, and a related video offers a detailed look at the PKG Installer and other hidden developer assets.
However, it’s important to note that this PS4 jailbreak news has also been called a “likely fake” as well. Hishamage and his team have a less than positive reputation in the modding community, so many folks are already calling foul on this entire operation. Many commenters have also noted that the footage shows nothing that couldn’t have been captured on a demo kiosk PS4. While kiosk systems are hard for mainstream consumers to access, they’re not impossible to find.
Should the news be true, the arrival of a proper PS4 jailbreak has the potential to change the hardware’s future drastically. Jailbreaks allow users to engage in tasks like the launching of unauthorized homebrew applications. More troubling however, is the tantalizing prospect of being able to pirate PS4 games from popular torrent websites. Especially with consoles like the PSP and Dreamcast, piracy had a massive influence on how those systems performed at retail. Could PS4 be destined to meet the same fate? Only time will tell!
