Neil Druckmann, creative director for The Last of Us, has suggested that Ellie’s story may continue beyond The Last of Us.
In an interview conducted by MCV, Druckmann talks about how he would be totally open to working with author Faith Erin Hicks — whom Druckmann collaborated with for the comic, The Last of Us: American Dreams — to tell another story on Ellie, the 14-year-old co-star from The Last of Us. Druckmann elaborates on this in more detail:
“It was great working with her, helping flesh out Ellie and coming up with [Ellie’s best friend] Riley…I told Faith that if she ever wants to do it again for The Last of Us, there was a story between what happens in [downloadable content] Left Behind and where the story starts, and I would do it with her.”
When asked if, perhaps, The Last of Us: American Dreams could be turned into an episodic gaming experience, Druckmann gave a very open-minded response:
“I don’t know if the genre makes a good fit for a place like Naughty Dog, but if the team was ever inspired to do something totally different like that it would be fun and cool to challenge ourselves.
“With Left Behind, that was our big challenge in terms of not leaning so much on action, and we toyed a little bit with branching dialogue. So we’ll see what more we can do in the future.”
Judging from the responses Druckmann gave during the interview, the idea of continuing and expanding the story of The Last of Us seems to be a strong possibility in the future. This would offer fans of the game an opportunity to once again enter the world of The Last of Us, whether that be as a game or in another format.
