Of course everyone is familiar with popular Minecraft conventions like Minecon, but Mineorama? This convention had Minecraft fans skeptical from the start, but many still proceeded with pre-ordering tickets and giving the unofficial convention a go. Those who purchased tickets may be finding themselves at the end of a scam.
Unofficial Minecraft Convention – $500k Scam, or Misunderstanding?
Yes, that’s right. $500,000 was spent to pre-purchase tickets to the Mineorama convention. With so much money involved, it certainly sounds like a scam, but the organizers behind this unofficial Minecraft convention assure everyone that they are “sincerely attempting to make this right,” after pulling the plug on the convention that was supposed to take place in mid-July. In spite of the last minute cancellation of the con, the organizers have told fans that the event has only been postponed, and they fully intend on rescheduling the event for another date.
While it’s still a possibility that they are telling the truth, it seems quite unlikely. It seems nearly impossible to get any real answers from those organizing and hosting the event. The Mineorama convention website has been suspended, and their official Twitter accounts are of no help. The Mineorama Twitter handle has even been taken by a 16-year-old who ridicules Mineorama via tweets with said account. If you turn to Lou Gasco’s Twitter page, Gasco being the “Executive Producer” of Mineorama, you won’t find any answers there either. He hasn’t tweeted since July 8th, though he “sincerely apologize[s] for all the harm.” He continues to say, “It was not our intent, and only me to blame.” His last tweets from July 8th promise a Twitch livestream for Q&A, but conveniently did not follow through, as you can tell from his last tweet that reads, “I am trying to answer questions but noone is seeing it. How do I make this Q&A work?”
We can only hope that refunds will be given out, but it seems very unlikely at this time.
