Instead of attacking Assassin Creed series, gaming feminists and women supporters should start worshiping and respecting the Legend of Zelda series; this one spin-off entity, internationally known as Hyrule Warriors, will feature at least eight playable women and five playable men. Meaning ladies and gentlemen, you finally have this once in a lifetime moment when an “international known AAA gaming title” is going to have more female characters than men.
Of course, other popular titles exist that also feature more women in the main cast like Bayonetta, but this particular Nintendo and Koei Tecmo cooperation game deserves some credit and attention, especially since most of their products are affiliated in having a male dominated atmosphere. For starters, Koei Tecmo projects have always contained multitudes of individuals, but these hack-and-slash franchises always have more men. On the other hand, Nintendo doesn’t even showcase any new characters (much less girls), so this professional company can be said to be more on the conservative side. Although adding more ladies is nice, one wonders if quantity actually beats quality?
Assuming that a majority would definitely vouch for “no,” this female writer also agrees with readers because gaming critics regardless of the gender will carefully observe these damsels or warriors by how they are perceived or projected despite the numbers. Fortunately, this entertainment industry continues to grow and reflect on these modern issues. Eventually, audiences won’t be thinking about numbers but about how worried mothers act during war vs peace times. Are these mothers depicted to be stern and proud or cautious and timid? Basically, are these Hyrule champions like our soldiers who mask their fears and share their caring side to wounded fellows? Maybe, maybe not.
Times often change and reflect on products. Years ago, our cliche princess Zelda played not only as a role of a damsel in distress but also a key guide in Ocarina of Time. Now, she is a fierce warrior in the battlefields, wielding various weapons. Despite seeing a glimpse of her timeless transformation, Princess Ruto, Lana, Impa, Sheik and more female candidates will also have a rare opportunity to shine and be dynamic beings. Therefore, players should definitely appreciate this new content.
Arriving first, this cooperated masterpiece will hit Japan in August 14. Next, Europe fans will celebrate and grasp this fighting game in September 19th. After waiting a week later, North Americans will line up in retail stores in September 26th. Remember though, only Wii-U users can operate this upcoming game, which is very unfortunate for other console owners. For more information regarding this project’s appealing features, please visit the Nintendo’s official website for this innovative game.
