Rockstar’s most recent open-world video game, Grand Theft Auto 5, released September of last year for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to worldwide critical acclaim. The then-next-gen Xbox One and PlayStation 4 had not been released yet, but it wouldn’t be too long after their arrival for gamers to request “HD editions” of their favorite Xbox 360 and PS3 titles.

Grand Theft Auto 5 seeks to join the likes of The Last of Us: Remastered in making the jump to current-gen consoles.
Now, roughly a year after the release of the newest consoles, gamers are gradually seeing their wishes fulfilled. Naughty Dog’s grim masterpiece, The Last of Us, released for the PS4 late last month in the form of The Last of Us: Remastered (to once again, widespread critical acclaim). After this year’s excellent E3 conference, it was revealed that arguably the greatest game of 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5, would also be making the next-generation leap. Most people speculated that the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of GTA5 would release during either the Fall or Holiday season of this year, however, with Grand Theft Auto 5‘s no-show at GamesCom, and the end of 2014 creeping closer and closer, some are having doubts.
James Jarvis, a producer/editor at ComputerAndVideoGames.com, recently stated the following regarding the situation:
“If it’s gonna be this year, you want to build the hype up a good few months before the game comes out, and there isn’t much of the year left. If the previews don’t happen really soon, there’s a possibility we won’t be seeing ‘GTA 5’ on new-gen, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, until next year.”
Jarvis also said:
“If we take a look at the dates when we went to see the game before it was released, the first clue was on Jan. 31, 2013, a full eight months before the game came out. GTA5 launched last Sept. 17. CVG then went to see a preview of the title in May 2013, four months before the game’s launch. The online preview was available to press last August, a month before it hit stores.”

The main point James Jarvis seems to be making is that, when comparing the release timeline of last-gen’s Grand Theft Auto 5 to that of the anticipated current-gen release, they don’t match up. Rockstar has not given much additional information regarding the current-gen version of GTA5, and the company’s silence may imply that it may possibly be delayed until 2015. A speculative rumor that, if it turns out to be true, will surely disappoint many current-generation console owners.
Other evidence shows that there may have been content cut from the last-gen iterations of Grand Theft Auto 5, specifically relating to a cops vs. crooks mode, and the ability to ride horses (among other varieties of fauna found in Los Santos) that Rockstar may be retro-fitting into the current-gen version. Nevertheless, neither the press nor public has heard very much in regards to a possible 2014 release date. The fact is that, the longer Rockstar stays quiet about relevant Grand Theft Auto 5 information, the less likely it is that gamers are going to play the current-generation version of the game this year.
