Following the Destiny beta back in July, many participating gamers criticized the game due to the realization that each planet has only a single area to explore. Bungie stated that many participants failed to realize each location’s density, not just geographically, but feature-wise as well. The Halo developer states that each planet will be filled to the brim with a large variety of activities and events to take part in within the full game. Additionally, Bungie states that each planet has the potential to become even larger because of future add-ons to the game.
Bungie Responds to Criticism of Destiny‘s Size
In a recent response to fan criticism over the size of Destiny, Jonty Barnes, director of game production, said (courtesy of Eurogamer):
“If I’m honest with you, it blew my mind, because it’s the biggest game we’ve ever made. I don’t think people understand the depth and amount of gameplay there is in Destiny.”
He also stated that gamers didn’t take into account the fact that they were playing the beta, not the full Destiny experience.
“I don’t understand how people could have that concern when you think about that and all the different planets we’re going to open up and the gameplay we’ve got there…”
Betas of games are typically utilized to test gameplay, systems, and features, and are not representative of the final product. Understandably, Bungie used the beta as a tool to acquire constructive feedback and gather data on how to further improve upon mechanics within the game.
In regards to the scope of the full Destiny experience, fans can rest easy. Barnes certainly is.
Check out what he has to say on the matter.
“I honestly believe Destiny is a huge game. I can tell you that through blood and sweat as well. It’s been a huge game and undertaking for us. Compared to anything we’ve done before, if you’re going to do a comparison, you’re laughing, honestly.”
Destiny is releasing for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on September 9th. Watch the launch trailer below.
