Will The Sims 4 content be locked behind paywalls?

We recently heard the inclusion of outdoor pools and toddler levels will not be available at launch on The Sims 4, disappointing many fans. This might just be the first in a long list of things we will not see a launch, but may see in the near future.

If Electronic Arts and Maxis stick to their reputation, The Sims 4 is going to have a few hiccups for fans. One of these hiccups might be locked content behind paywalls, simple things like “Advanced Pool Creator” might cost $0.99.

This would be a new kind of DLC packaging content, instead of bundling everything in a big dump of expansion content, the user will be able to pick and choose between very small amount of content to enhance the gaming experience.

We still don’t know for sure if this is what Maxis is planning, but the move away from simple things, like pools and toddler levels, makes us wonder what type of DLC we will see on The Sims 4.

It could be packaged larger than just a pool creator, perhaps EA will ship out the DLC content every month for subscribers. This would be a way to keep The Sims fanatics paying for more content, while EA and Maxis scrape up a few new features monthly.

Maxis has become a shadow of its former self, Spore failed to win over fans of the evolution idea, SimCity was a launch nightmare and failed to take off the same way SimCity 4 had, due to region locking, always-on connection and other issues.

The Sims 4 is really Maxis’ last shot at showing they can produce something unique and fun, without the business end of the stick from EA, their owners. It might be hard for EA to resist milking the franchise, but when SimCity and Spore both failed to take off, The Sims is their last hope.
