2014 Pokémon Video Game Australian National Championships

I had the fantastic opportunity to sit in at Melbourne Town Hall and witness the 2014 Australian National Pokémon Championships. Not only was this a prime spot to boost your Nintendo Street Pass, you got watch on as people of all ages shared their love for the franchise and battle it out for the chance to compete in the World Championships hosted in Washington D.C this August. For those who weren’t competing, there was plenty of fun to be had and merchandise to win. Everybody that had a copy of either Pokémon X or Y were gifted with a shiny Mamoswine, based on last years world champion Arash Ommati, who had one in his winning party.

The junior division showing off their skills

The day was long and full of energy as over six hundred competitors battled in their respective age groups ( junior, senior and masters) over several battles. The top sixteen with the highest winner ratings then competed in singles-elimination finals where the list of players was reduced to eight, these Pokémon masters competed until there were four, then the main stage would be the show ground of each division. Players that placed in the top two of their age division won flights, accommodation and invitation, and players who placed 3rd and 4th also won invitation to the Pokémon Video Game World Championships hosted in Washington D.C in August.

The winners for each division were

Juniors- Nick. K with runner-up Rushdan

Seniors- Brent with runner-up Angus

Masters- Dayne with runner-up Michael

Other exciting activities included the cosplay competition featuring some talented participants. The top four of the day were brought to the main stage between battles where the crowd was involved in deciding the winner by round of applause.

Congratulations to Bianca (far right) who took the prize with her home made version of her in-game character, she went home with;

Finally, those who stayed throughout the long day were treated by a special exclusive screening from Pokémon’s new season: XY. A big congratulations to not only the winners but the runner ups as well, bring home that World Championship!
