If the numbers matter to you so much, you’ll be pleased to know that Rainbow Six Siege has been confirmed by Ubisoft to run at 60fps on PC, Xbox One and PS4. They haven’t mentioned what the resolution will be, however. Frame rate and resolution debates are all the rage these days and developers have begun to take note, ticking off boxes when this standard has been achieved. CEO Yves Guillemot explains what led them to push Siege to this level and why it replaces Rainbow Six Patriots which was announced several years ago:
“We realised that we needed to go first with multiplayer. Before, when we made games, we were leading first with single-player and then taking the systems from that to do multi-player. With Rainbow Six we said, ‘OK, we have to change our way of doing things’ – lead with mutli-player first and then make single-player from that.”
“That’s what made us change the game totally. We decided to restart with that in mind. The decision came from what we were seeing in the marketplace and because we wanted to do a 60 frames-per-second multi-player game.”
This is surprising news, as it means that Siege will be way more multiplayer focused than previous games. That isn’t to say that the singleplayer campaign will be lacking, it just means that multiplayer quality is a big focus. There’s a running assumption that FPS these days only seem to care about multiplayer over campaigns, however it’s not as black and white as that, and often developers each have their own reasons for focusing on certain aspects of the game. In this case, 60fps multiplayer gameplay is the most important to Ubisoft with Siege and Yves explains why:
“It really came from the gameplay side. We felt that the only chance we had to come with something that would be impressive in the online FPS arena was to have 60 frames-per-second and no limits imposed by having single-player. That’s what made us change direction.”
Understandably, Siege will have to go the extra mile to stand out in the crowd of big name FPS. The inclusion of destruction shown during the E3 reveal as well as subsequent gameplay videos has shown that Siege is introducing tactical gameplay to unprecedented destruction, something that’s bound to be very unique. If this game can achieve a solid 60fps on top of its level of destruction, then we’re in for a treat. Rainbow Six Siege launches sometime in 2015.
