Progress Resumes on Fan-Made Sonic 2 HD

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD

Earlier this week, Sega’s blue mascot celebrated his 23rd birthday. While plenty of the more recent games haven’t been up to par, Sonic the Hedgehog still remains as one of the gaming industry’s most beloved, iconic characters.

After several embarrassing 3D titles- and a forced relationship with a princess- Sonic fans demanded that the blue hedgehog return to his roots with more 2D games. Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 was released in October 2010 as a digital multi-platform title; Episode 2 released two years later, in May 2012. Both episodes of Sonic 4 were praised for the fantastic visual homage to the Sega Genesis titles, but were criticized by reviewers and fans alike for bizarre physics, and the slow pace of gameplay. Other more recent titles were released which feature 2D elements, but only in certain areas. Both Sonic Generations and Sonic: Lost World feature a hybrid of the classic 2D gameplay found in older games, and 3D platforming from Sonic Adventure and beyond.

While the library of fan-made Sonic games may not be that robust, a team of individuals is currently working on a high-definition remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game was originally cancelled due to a “programming element being removed with no possibility of return in its existing form“. While several of the original members of the development team have rejoined, the official Facebook page states that a few members were unable to continue working on Sonic 2 HD due to “real life obligations”. The previous build of the game- including the working Alpha- has been officially discontinued. Once everything has been set into motion, the new team will begin the project anew, building Sonic 2 HD from scratch.

For updates directly from the team, the official Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD Facebook page can be found here. Upon release, the HD remake will be available as a PC-exclusive.
