League of Legends players receiving scholarships for their performance

Robert Morris University in Illinois is offering League of Legends players a chance to play their way into school through League based scholarships.

Students attending the university will have the opportunity to receive up to 50 percent tuition and room and board toward their college career, which could equate to $19,000.

With the rapid increase in eSports over the past few years (arguably because of League of Legends itself) Robert Morris University claims to “recognize the value and legitimacy of eSports” and intends to treat it’s League players in the same way it would any of its other athletes.

Associate Athletic Director Kurt Melcher explains that it is one of RMU‘s goals to create opportunities to its students regardless of their interests.

“Robert Morris University has always been at the forefront of providing opportunities for a diverse student population with different interests and skills,” said Melcher.

RMU will be competing in the Collegiate Star League, which is made up of 103 different institutions. RMU will be the only one offering scholarships to its team, the Robert Morris University Illinois Eagles.
