Samsung To Compete With Oculus And Sony With Their Own VR Headset

Virtual Reality seems to be the newest and hottest innovation in the gaming industry.Originally Oculus hyped up the idea of a Virtual Reality headset, soon followed by Sony’s own Project Morpheus for the PS4. Now, reports suggest that Samsung is entering the Virtual Reality race with a VR headset of their own. This report comes from the Engadget blog, which formerly revealed  the Master Chief Collection for Xbox One. Sources close to Samsung claim that the virtual reality headset is not only currently in development but is set to be announced later this year. The source also notes that this is not the rumored “Galaxy Glass” project.  Supposedly, this virtual reality headset will have an OLED screen, which can be compared to the second Oculus Rift development kit. The device is meant to be used for gaming, and since Samsung is the company developing the headset, the games compatible with it would have to be Android games.

So How Would The Samsung VR Headset Work?

Unlike the Oculus Rift, which is meant to be used alongside a PC, the Samsung VR headset is meant to work with flagship Galaxy devices (such as Note 3, or Galaxy S5). The source claims that the consumer model of the headset would be powered by next-gen, currently unannounced Galaxy devices. It’s still unclear if the device will be wired or wireless (my bet is on wired, due to the need for as little latency as possible) and we’re still not sure if the headset will track head movement depth-wise. According to the source, Samsung plans to release the headset at a cheaper price than both the Oculus Rift, and Project Morpheus. Keep in mind that this is still not an officially announced project. When asked to comment on the rumor, Samsung simply replied with “Samsung does not comment on rumor and speculation.” Of course, if this project is true we will keep you informed as soon as information is released. Until then, we will just have to wait and see if Samsung plans on entering the Virtual Reality race.
