Parrot’s Bebop Drone uses Oculus Rift to provide first person view.

From the creators that brought us the Bebop drone quadrocopter that we can control with our smart phones, we are now presented with the Parrot Bebop drone 3.0. While we cannot say for sure what it will cost we can probably assume it will cost between $300 for the drone and $1000 for the camera equipment. It will be sold alongside an android powered controller called SkyController. While the Skycontroller can be used with an iPad, it’s not mandatory.

The new Bebop drone uses a 14-megapixel 180-degree fish-eye lens with 3-way stabilization in order to keep the image steady while you snap away. It also makes use of a 4-antenna WI-FI system based on the latest technology to keep in contact with the ground and, unlike its predecessors, provide a live stream of what its recording. The Bebop drone weighs a mere 14 ounces and is 15 inches across in size.  But can all this be worth it with the 1200 mAh battery pack only giving it a 12 minute fly time?

Using the Oculus Rift Dev kit together with the Skycontroller and the Bebop drone 3.0, Parrot managed to offer a insanely cool out-of-body experience. Moreover, it sounds like you will be able to buy this setup in the near future.  While unclear exactly what this will cost or when we will see it in stores we can ultimately say that it’s still ways off with Oculus yet to release a consumer version of the rift.

Projects like this bring new hope to concepts like the Razer Eidolon which was released in a trailer as an April fools joke. The Razer Eidolon was a concept drone that was released from a wrist dock to proceed to follow behind you and provide a 3rd person view of yourself as well as a map of your surroundings. Who knows, maybe Razer will jump onto the bandwagon in the near future and develop the Eidolon quadrocopter for its consumers. You hear that Razer? We are waiting!
