With Disney’s acquisition of the complete Star Wars property, several projects have been thrown into uncertainty and development limbo. It seems like projects are announced, and shortly thereafter canned, within weeks from each other. During E3 2012, LucasArts revealed a debut gameplay trailer for Star Wars 1313. This new, dark tale within the Star Wars lore would take place in the criminal underground of the planet-city Coruscant. Despite the promising footage and developer updates, Star Wars 1313 was cancelled after Disney purchased the Lucas properties. Earlier this year, footage of a cancelled third-person character-action game featuring Darth Maul as the protagonist was revealed. The game would have explored the Episode I antagonist’s origins, and his rise to power as a Sith Lord. While the game looked to have a concrete engine, and a solid vision, Disney cancelled it.
Last December, a new game for the Star Wars universe was announced via the official Star Wars website. Star Wars: Attack Squadrons was a space-combat dog-fighting game for PC. The title was going to be a free-to-play game that would run in supported web browsers. A popular example of a multiplayer browser game would be that of the fan-made Attack on Titan game. Players would take part in 16-player battles, with selections from the armory of Star Wars ships at his/her disposal- each of which could be customized. Developer Area 52 Games held a closed Beta test for the project back in January. However, according to the official Facebook page for Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, the game has since been cancelled, in order to “focus on other Star Wars game experiences”.
Currently, it seems that Star Wars: Battlefront at DICE is the only game yet to be affected by the LucasArts buyout. However, development on the title was delayed, due to the poor release and post-launch issues revolving around Battlefield 4.
