What Happened to Sony’s Driveclub?

by GH Staff

Originally, Driveclub was supposed to be a launch title for the Playstation 4; however, a month before the release of the next generation console, Sony announced that the game was officially delayed until 2014. Sony apologized for this delay and, as a result, offered Compulsion Games’s Contrast free to Playstation Plus members.

Sony owned Evolution Studios, the team behind the Motorstorm series, was developing Driveclub and until today there has not been any official information about the next generation game: besides a rumored release date of Spring 2014. After this recent rumor, IGN was able to sit down with Sony’s Scott Rohde and get details about this game that has slowly ‘faded into oblivion.’

“What I will say is that it all comes back to that fundamental principle, and that’s that we want to build great games. And we really don’t want to release a game before it’s ready. And sometimes, this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we’re on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we get closer, we realize that we’d be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready. So, I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we’re willing to kind of eat that [cost], and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it.”

Now, this is quite troublesome: especially since Sony intended Driveclub to be released over four months ago. Perhaps, Mr. Rohde is speaking the truth; however, his inability to give a proper release window or confirm that it will be released in 2014 has to worry Playstation 4’s racing community. There is no indication that this game will be officially cancelled, but at the same time, the need for Sony to ‘go back to the drawing board’ means they had to have been really unhappy with the final product. Again, at the moment this is only speculation and hopefully when this game is released I will ‘eat my words.’ And optimistically, Rohde promised that the general public would get more details soon.
