Watch Dogs, the Orwellian open world action-adventure game being developed by Ubisoft has been given a firm release date of May 27th after its initial delays. Watch Dogs is coming to a variety of platforms, including both current and next gen consoles as well PC. The game is also being released on the Wii U, however no date has been given for its release on Nintendo’s latest console, another potentially damaging sign of the Wii U’s performance in the console market.

Watch Dogs was supposed to be available as a launch title for the release of the next-gen consoles late last year . The game hit delays as Ubisoft felt that the game wasn’t yet ready to be released and wanted to give the developers more time. This as well as the delay of fellow Ubisoft title ‘The Crew’ led to a fall in the company’s share price as well as making the selection of games at launch even more sparse for both next-gen consoles. Despite the disappointment, many since then have praised Ubisoft for not falling victim to shortsightedness and releasing a game that either wasn’t finished or they weren’t completely happy with.
For me, as disappointed as I was to hear that Watch Dogs was delayed, I’d much prefer that it was released one hundred percent complete as the game itself looks like a lot of fun. As much as I enjoyed GTA V, the problems I and many others initially experienced with the online part of the game left a sour taste. With the success of crowd-funding more and more games are being released while technically still in Alpha, so I respect Ubisoft’s commitment to releasing an entirely finished product, something which is becoming increasingly rare.
The release date announcement came with a gameplay and story trailer of its own, one that you can check out below:
