Kojima Talks Metal Gear Solid

During a Twitch TV interview with Geoff Knightley, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima expressed his thoughts about the first game in the series after receiving a question that asked which was his favorite game in the series to develop. Without the pressure of high sales to goad him into putting specific things into the game’s creation, it was easier to determine what he wanted. With that in mind, he continued to say that the majority of the game was made up of elements that were mostly a matter of personal taste.

“I didn’t have to think ‘I have to sell this game this much,’ so pretty much all I did was put in that game all the things I really like. I didn’t think at all of how to make this game sell well because I didn’t expect it to sell.”

The original Metal Gear Solid was released back in 1998, a little over fifteen years ago, as a third installment of the Metal Gear series which had been developed for the MSX2 home computer, and a sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Despite Kojima’s initial belief that the game’s sales would not be significant, Metal Gear Solid boasts over six million copies sold and is often regarded as one of the most influential and important games of all time.

Kojima also expressed interest in working on a Silent Hill game in the future, despite being nervous about the game’s horror genre and how he is “easily scared”. The series’ latest installment, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is slated for release on March 18 on the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain which has yet to get a release date.
