Australian man arrested for allegedly hacking League of Legends servers

by GH Staff

According to a report in The Australian, a young man is being held on charges of hacking into Riot servers and selling player/server IP addresses.

Police allege that Shane Duffy, 21, made as much as $1,000 a day from the illegal sales. Buyers were able to expose personal details and launch DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks on Riot servers and other players. Australian law enforcement worked closely with Riot and the FBI to gather evidence and make the arrest.

According to the report, Duffy faces three counts of computer hacking and misuse, two counts of fraud (dishonestly apply property to own use), two counts of fraud (dishonestly obtain property from another) and one count of fraud (dishonestly cause detriment and possessing equipment for purpose of committing/facilitating the commission of an offence). Police say that Duffy used a website to orchestrate the sales. The total number of transactions is believed to be nearly 900.

Duffy’s mother claims the charges are false. She says that her son was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and removed from school in only his fourth year. She notes that Duffy does have the skills necessary to pull off such a hack, but she swears he didn’t and that all of the IP addresses were already posted online somewhere else.

League of Legends has been a victim of repeated DDoS attacks over the last few months, which has caused a very noticeable decrease in server stability worldwide. It is unclear if the server stability and Duffy’s case are linked, and Riot has refused to comment.
