Initially set for a spring 2014 release, Obsidian’s kickstarter-funded RPG has received enough funding to grow into a much larger game, and as a consequence, it had been pushed back. Rose Gomez, the new producer on Pillars of Eternity has recently posted an update on the game’s kickstarter blog, introducing himself and providing some new information. Rose Gomez has been involved with Fallout: New Vegas, so his addition to the team most certainly can’t be a bad one.
Pillars of Eternity will be released in “winter 2014”, Gomez said, and while the date isn’t exactly set in stone yet, it’s at least an indication on when we can expect Obsidian’s old-school RPG to land. It will certainly make for a great Christmas present. It’s definitely a longer wait than originally planned, but it’s one that we’re confident will be worth it. Based on screenshots shown so far, Pillars of Eternity feels very Baldur’s Gate-like, and going back in time to the golden age of RPG’s is an opportunity worth waiting for.
Speaking of screenshots, Rose Gomez had a few new ones to share with fans. They show some new interiors, as well as a preliminary form of the Druid’s cat form. And while on the subject of interiors, the biggest kickstarter backers are required to provide their support for the design of such interiors in due time. At this point, more than half of the game is actually done and in an alpha state, so Obsidian will clearly push hard to reach that winter 2014 launch windows. If you’ve backed them and want your own unique design for an inn implemented, act fast.
Furthermore, Rose Gomez highlighted that there will no longer be any new stretch goals for the game. The team’s commitment now is to finish up the game and release it this year, and do so in the highest possible quality. “After much discussion and consideration of the poll on our forums we have decided not to pursue any additional stretch goals. Rest assured that the team is working hard on completing the game and including our current stretch goals.” stated Gomez.
