Opinion: Pokémon Cheats Ruin the Community

Pokémon cheats

Stop. I know what you’re thinking. “Of course cheating is bad.” For the longest time, that’s what I thought. I was under the assumption that almost everyone understood that cheating was wrong. It IS cheating after all.

Oh, how little did I know of the resolve of the cheating community.

Pokémon cheats have been around forever. We all remember swimming up and down the shoreline duping rare candies with missingno, right? However, having grown up, I now see many faults of cheating that my 12 year old self was blind to. As it turns out, most Pokémon trainers would agree that any form of cheating that influences the outcome of battle is wrong. Yet surprisingly, there are many who feel cloning Pokémon is perfectly fine and should be encouraged.

Let’s discuss this. I’m going to take a trip around the web searching for player opinions. Time to argue!

I don’t get why people must be so butthurt about all this. It’s all good as long as it doesn’t affect another player’s gameplay. Cloning can be seen as fun since you’re opening up a whole new aspect of the game and for some people this can be seen as “fun”

Agreed. If you’re solely playing Pokémon by yourself with no intention on participating in the online portions of the game, then no, Pokémon cheats don’t matter. However, how realistic is that? Pokémon X and Y are notorious for a poor post-game. So what’s left to do? Trade me your cloned Pokémon? Here’s the thing: I don’t want your clones and the fact that I can’t tell the difference between legitimate Pokémon and clones means nothing. If there are clones circulating through the trade system, it devalues the entire process and enjoyment for players with integrity. So again, if you want to keep them solely to yourself, go for it, but the fact that an online marketplace exists, and I don’t want them.

The duping trick ruined the economy Animal Crossing set up by making everything available by the thousands… But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, people hoarding a country-exclusive DLC item had a strangle hold on the market.

The previous post was created on a Pokémon thread. Users were essentially debating whether or not Pokémon cheats ruins the game. With that being said, yes having thousands of each item available is a bad thing. If every item in Animal Crossing, due to the increased supply, has been brought down to have barely any value, why even play in the first place? There’s nothing left to work for. As for the strangle hold, I would rather have that than have everything readily available. The same principle applies to Pokémon. If every Pokémon is available for next to nothing, the challenge of completing your Pokedex decreases dramatically which also decreases the value of your game.

In a game with such a large number of potential competitive teams, it would be idiotic to try to breed a 6IV variant of that pokemon for every combination you’d like to try. That’s why you clone someone else’s 6 IV pokemon to save time.

If you haven’t heard, Pokémon is a ridiculously competitive game. What’s the purpose of cutting corners other than the fact that you simply don’t want to put in the hard work in order to remain competitive? As someone who would breed and train their Pokémon honestly, the very thought of someone duping their way into contention boils my blood. Of course, many would suggest that I too should dupe. Why not? Oh yeah, because I’m not a cheater.

At any rate, you know my view on the subject and I would be more than willing to debate this topic with any who dare.
