Numbers, we do love our numbers. In this case, we’re speaking about 15 million of them. That means that Blizzard’s Diablo 3 has now sold over 15 million copies, across all platforms. Initially, Diablo 3 was launched for the PC and Mac exclusively, but has made it to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in the meantime. It’s not stopping, not even close. With the first major expansion pack to the game, Reaper of Souls, Diablo 3 will drastically change the gameplay experience, while bringing the popular action-RPG to the Playstation 4.
Hmm, I’ve used the word popular. Perhaps that’s not the most appropriate term to use to describe Diablo 3. I had my copy on launch day, but the game somehow didn’t have a long-lasting appeal for me personally, and many gamers seem to have shared in that view. Sure, I enjoyed my first playthroughs, I finished the game on Inferno, but found myself lacking a purpose soon after. A couple of hardcore runs gave me something to do for a short while, but the game has been collecting dust on my shelf for a long time now. The paragon levels weren’t enough of an incentive to keep me going, and the Auction House killed most of the enjoyment in actually working for gear.
That might change though, and I’m eager to try out Reaper of Souls. The expansion will not only bring new areas and a new class (the Paladin), but most importantly, will eliminate both the gold and the real-money auction house. If Reaper of Souls will manage to do to Diablo 3 what Lord of Destruction did for Diablo 2, fans will most likely be pleased. Regardless, the game’s financial success cannot be contested (not that Blizzard was suffering financially), and 15 million copies sold is an impressive number. The last reports from Activision came in November, when the game was sitting on 14 million. Considering Diablo 3 released in May 2012, it’s actually still doing quite well, even after almost two years. Reaper of Souls will most likely boost these figures. My main concern is if whether or not it will boost the game in terms of quality too. After all, there are some free-to-play alternatives (such as Path of Exile), and Torchlight 2 managed to do many things much better.
Are you guys eager to get back into the proverbial saddle with Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls?
