Rambo: The Videogame – possibly the worst looking trailer of the year

It was back in 2011 when Teyon (a small Polish developer), in collaboration with , announced that a game was being developed. The game, at least according to Reef officials, would becomeĀ “a triple-A title on PS3, 360 and PC and will capture the gritty atmosphere and full-on action which made the Rambo movies so successful”. And then they gave us the first trailer of the game, which looked legendarily bad.

But, years have passed since, and we haven’t heard much about the game, up until now. Reef and Teyon have graced us with a new trailer for the game, and it does look slightly better – not that it’s an achievement, mind you. From what we can tell, the devs are not exactly sure of the meaning of “triple-A”. It would be the only reasonable explanation for the 2006-looking graphics.

Now, I loved the first Rambo movie, First Blood (the sequels, not so much). It wasn’t so much about mindless gunfights, as it was rather a representation of how soldiers fighting in Vietnam had difficulties re-establishing their old lives and integrating into a society that had changed and had rejected them. It carried an emotional feeling and it eventually became a classic. But I find nothing even remotely close to the feel of the first movie in what the game looks like.

I’ve already mentioned the horrid graphics, which you can easily see for yourself. But I’d be willing to overlook that, if not for the terrible sound editing in the trailer (notice how the explosions carry on for seconds, even after Rambo is shown climbing a mountain). The gameplay looks like it’s a mixture of stealth and mindless killing, with a pinch of Rambo stabbing himself in the hand or people exploding for no apparent reason. And, if that wasn’t enough, I don’t even know what to say about the first-person aiming. The perspective is fixed, while the weapons seem to be moving left and right. It’s kinda like playing Duck Hunter as Rambo.

Still, I have to applaud the devs for pulling off a good dose of comedy with the trailer. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time. I mean, it’s hard not to, when you look at Rambo’s ridiculous hair and his blank, unchanging facial expression (singular, since it’s the same one everywhere).

It’s sad to see that a small company like Teyon will probably disappear once the game is released. It would have been great to see a quality Rambo game, and other means could have been employed to make a great game. You don’t have to have the finances of Ubisoft or EA to make a quality game, as Telltale has proven recently. But, I simply cannot see a bright future for Rambo: The Videogame – Machine of War (even the title is bad), nor the developer studio. I could not justify paying a full retail price for such a game.

Still, if you’re a huge Rambo fan and have nothing better to do with your money, you should know that the game will come out sometime in 2014 (probably), for the PC, 3 and the Xbox 360.
